Since moving in here we have had trouble establishing some routines. Kitchen clean-up being the current hotspot. I don’t really know why. We’ve always shared kitchen duties so the idea of having to clean the kitchen after meals certainly isn’t new in the life of any child of mine —but struggle we have.
Having a stress fracture and wearing a boot means my mobility is limited and living in a bi-level house means I am staying on one floor or the other for extended periods of time. Maybe that’s why it’s been an issue, I haven’t been able to oversee as much as I usually can.
So today we put in place a new system. A Kitchen Clean-up Master List that has to be checked off and finally approved by mom or dad when they are done.
As I said earlier we share kitchen duties, sometimes I do it, sometimes I assign a child to do it. We have no regular assignments (I have found that to not work as well as I’d like) but either I or my husband will assign a child to kitchen duty as we deem it appropriate. The assigned child may choose a helper if they wish but with the understanding that the assigned child, not the helper, will be held responsible for a job well done.
So my husband and I sat down to watch a movie after dinner (a nice treat I must say!) and when we came upstairs afterwards this is what we found:
A spotless kitchen and three children who worked together to make it so!
OK so it’s working…thus far. I’ll keep you updated.
P.S. Wondering about the kitchen? It’s undergoing a transformation little by little. I’ll be posting about that in the months to come.
