The 1790s Series

2025

The 1790s Series is a photographic fine art series that celebrates and showcases the elegance and diversity of women's dress in the 1790s. Inspired by the works of artists like Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun and others, the 1790s Series is a tribute to the artistic legacy of the late 18th century.

The 1790s were a pivotal time in fashion as they marked a dramatic shift from the structured, elaborate styles of the 18th century to the simpler, more natural silhouettes that would define the early 19th century.

From the last remnants of Rococo fashion, to the more relaxed styles influenced by revolution and changing ideals, the 1790s saw a wide variety of styles.

Revolution and the rejection of aristocratic extravagance, Neoclassicism and the return to the classical art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, the rise of the middle class and an increase in global trade that introduced new textiles and accessories, all played a part in this dramatic shift and make it a fascinating and visually rich period for historical portraiture.
