Elizabeth

“The inspiration for my outfit came from the self portrait of Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun dated 1790. My goal was to faithfully recreate every aspect of the portrait, with my own spin to suit my personality and palette. Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun is wearing a black round gown, a chemisette, a turban cap, and a contrasting sash. I used my husband’s paint palette from art school that matched the one in her portrait. This style was popularized in the 1790s by Theresa Tallien, Josephine De Beauharnais, and Juliette Recamier. The three of them created a new style in the 1790 based on gowns from Josephine’s home country of Martinique and traditional ottoman dress. 'Liberty, Equality, Fashion' by Anne Higonnet goes into great detail about this fashion collaboration.”
